STU Rallies To Take Two From #SandSharkBaseball

HARDEEVILLE — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting St. Thomas on Saturday, as the Bobcats took two of three in a Sun Conference series at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

After being shutout by Junior Delatorre in Friday's series opener, the Bobcats' bats came to life in 9-3 and 15-14 victories to claim the series.

St. Thomas (7-4, 4-2 TSC) scored six runs over the final three innings of the opener to break open a close game. All of USCB's offense came via home runs, as Zack Saldivar hit a game-tying two-run shot in the second inning and Alex Bonilla added a solo blast as a pinch-hitter leading off the ninth.

Jamie Strock took the loss for the Sand Sharks (11-4, 3-3), allowing four runs over six innings with four strikeouts. Josh Reinhart went 3-for-4 for USCB.

The Sand Sharks plated 10 runs in the second inning of the finale, taking an 11-0 lead after two frames before St. Thomas came roaring back. The Bobcats scored five in the third, six in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 12-11 lead.

USCB tied it on Johnny Cole's towering homer in the fifth and led 14-12 after Bonilla's RBI single in the seventh, but the Bobcats scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth to win it.

Ashly Morris hit his first career home run for USCB in the nightcap, while Reinhart, Bonilla and John Cloyd each had three hits and Zack Holt added three RBIs.

Blake Drew took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over four innings.

The Sand Sharks are scheduled to host Trinity Baptist for a non-conference doubleheader at noon Tuesday, weather permitting.
