WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team dropped the opener of its key Sun Conference series at Northwood on Friday, falling 10-1 to the league-leading Seahawks.
Johnny Cole recorded two of USCB's five hits, including a solo homer in the seventh inning, as the No. 18 Sand Sharks (21-6, 9-4 TSC) had their six-game conference winning streak snapped.
Luis Roman hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and had five RBIs for the seventh-ranked Seahawks (20-7, 11-2), who extended their lead atop the Sun Conference standings to two games over USCB.
Northwood ace Cody Gray (4-2) struck out seven and allowed one run on three hits and two walks over eight innings to earn the win. Junior Delatorre (4-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs — five earned — on 10 hits over 6 1/3 frames.
The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
