#SandSharkBaseball Falls Short vs. No. 7 Northwood

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team came up short in both ends of a Sun Conference doubleheader at No. 7 Northwood on Saturday, losing the opener 8-0 and dropping the finale 8-7 in 10 innings.

The 18th-ranked Sand Sharks (21-8, 9-6 TSC) left eight men on base and hit into two double plays in the day's first game as they were shutout for the first time this season. Ashly Morris, Johnny Cole and Josh Reinhart each had two hits for USCB. Jamie Strock (4-3) took the loss, allowing six runs — four earned — in 6 1/3 innings.

USCB was poised to salvage the final game of the series before Northwood (22-7, 13-2) rallied in the late innings. The Sand Sharks took a 3-1 lead on Cole's two-run homer in the third and made it 5-1 on RBI singles from Zack Holt and Reinhart in the fifth.

Northwood pushed across three runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, but USCB answered in the eighth to tie it on Kyle Thompson's RBI groundout.

The Sand Sharks took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th when John Cloyd scored on Morris' squeeze bunt, but back-to-back errors to start the bottom of the inning led to a pair of Northwood runs as the Seahawks rallied to sweep the series.

Chaztin Venezia went 4-for-5 with an RBI and Cloyd also had four hits for USCB in the nightcap. Blake Drew (3-3) took the loss, allowing four runs — two earned — in 3 2/3 innings.

The Sand Sharks return home Tuesday for a doubleheader against Brewton-Parker at 1 p.m.

NOTES: Cole drew two walks, giving him 30 for the season and breaking RJ Neal's single-season USCB record of 28 set in 2012. … Cole's six home runs are the most by a USCB player since Brandon Collins hit seven in 2010. … Morris has recorded multiple hits in five of his past six games and Cole has at least two hits in four consecutive contests.
