HARDEEVILLE — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Brewton-Parker on Tuesday at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
The Sand Sharks rallied for three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to claim a 9-7 victory in the opener before the Barons scored six runs in the sixth inning to salvage the split with a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
Ashly Morris went 4-for-4 and scored three runs, Alex Bonilla was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Johnny Cole was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in Game 1 to help USCB overcome three Brewton-Parker home runs. Michael Johnson also drove in a pair of runs.
The Sand Sharks (22-9) trailed 6-2 before Cole's two-run single and Bonilla's RBI single in the fifth cut the deficit to 6-5. USCB put up four more runs in the sixth with Bonilla's two-run single plating the tying and go-ahead runs.
Joe Schaffhauser (3-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs — two earned — in two innings of relief, and Blake Drew pitched a perfect seventh for his seventh save, adding to his single-season USCB record.
Cole went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Johnson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Zack Holt and Chaztin Venezia each added two hits in the finale.
The Sand Sharks scored five runs in the fourth to break open a tied game, but Brian Donnelly's two-run homer and Brandon Bynam's two-run double highlighted the six-run sixth for the Barons.
The big inning spoiled a solid relief outing by Paxton Buckner, who allowed three hits over four scoreless frames. Josh Altman (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run and two hits in one-third of an inning.
USCB had the tying run in scoring position in the sixth and seventh but couldn't push it across.
The Sand Sharks are back in action Friday and Saturday, hosting Embry-Riddle for a key Sun Conference series. The opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday and the series concludes with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
