HARDEEVILLE — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team suffered its second consecutive one-run defeat Friday, losing 3-2 in the opener of a three-game Sun Conference series against Embry-Riddle at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
Zack Saldivar went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Ashly Morris went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Sand Sharks (22-10, 9-7 TSC), but the Eagles (19-12, 7-5) took advantage of three USCB errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.
Junior Delatorre (4-2) was tagged with the loss despite a strong outing, allowing three runs — one earned — on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks over 7 2/3 innings. Blake Drew pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to keep the Sand Sharks within one run, but they couldn't scratch across the tying run.
Stetson Nelson (3-2) gave up two runs over 7 2/3 innings to claim the win, and Zac Grotz struck out four in 1 1/3 innings for the save.
The Eagles broke through for a run in the fourth and added an unearned run in the sixth for a 2-0 lead. USCB tied it in the sixth on Saldivar's RBI double and Morris' RBI single, but Morris was stranded at second.
A one-out error in the seventh set up Kyle Buchanan's sacrifice fly to give Embry-Riddle a 3-2 lead, and Grotz shut down USCB rallies in the eighth and ninth.
The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
