#SandSharkBaseball Opens Series With 7-3 Win At Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team ran its winning streak to six games by opening a three-game Sun Conference series at Thomas with a 7-3 victory on Friday.

Zack Holt blasted a three-run homer, Kyle Thompson had three hits and Zack Saldivar had two hits and two RBIs for the Sand Sharks (17-4, 7-3 TSC). Junior Delatorre (4-0) pitched seven strong innings for the win and Blake Drew worked two scoreless frames for his school-record sixth save of the season as USCB stayed with one game of league-leading Northwood.

USCB grabbed a 5-0 lead with a big second inning, as an error and a bloop single preceded Holt's three-run shot to left to open the scoring, Saldivar added an RBI single later in the inning and John Cloyd swiped home on a double steal.

Thomas starter Monte Reese settled in after that and kept the Night Hawks (9-8, 3-6) in it, and they scratched across a run in the third and pulled within 5-3 on Leo Benjamin's two-run homer in the sixth. Delatorre stranded two runners in scoring position in the seventh, and the Sand Sharks picked up two insurance runs in the eighth on Saldivar's RBI single and Ashly Morris' sacrifice fly.

The first two batters in the Thomas half of the eighth reached and USCB turned to Drew, who gave up a single to load the bases before getting a double-play ball and a groundout to get out of the jam without any damage. Drew then struck out two in the ninth to nail down the save.

The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.

NOTES: Drew's sixth save moved him past Colton Rudd (2012) and Kyle McCullough (2009) on USCB's single-season list, and moved him into a tie for third on the career list behind McCullough (11) and Rudd (7). … Delatorre has 14 career wins, tying him with Michael Heesch and McCullough for second on USCB career list behind Adam Miller (25). … USCB is 6-0 on the road this season after going 4-16 in 2014.
