Bats Keep Ringing As #SandSharkBaseball Finishes Sweep Of FMU

HARDEEVILLE – The USCB baseball team continued to make history Saturday, beating Florida Memorial 11-1 in the first game and tying a school record for runs in a 21-11 win in the finale of a doubleheader sweep at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

The Sand Sharks (19-2, 11-1 TSC) swept the three-game Sun Conference series to run their winning streak to nine games and continue the best start in program history.

Justin Kortessis belted a two-run homer among two hits and had three RBIs, and Thomas Estopare went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense in the first game. Brandon Joyce added two hits, and Kal Davis and Michael Johnson each drove in two runs for the Sand Sharks.

Senior right-hander Jamie Strock (5-1) limited the Lions to one unearned run over six innings to earn the win, allowing five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Joe Schaffhauser pitched a scoreless seventh. The Sand Sharks' pitching staff was aided by a number of outstanding defensive plays, including a highlight-reel double-play turn by shortstop Max Balter and second baseman Johnson.

USCB's bats kept ringing in the finale, as eight Sand Sharks collected multiple hits. Matt Kianka led the way, going 4-for-5 with four runs and four RBIs, while Estopare was 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs. Davis added two hits and three RBIs, and Max Balter, Joyce, and Dylan Yankle each had two hits and two RBIs.

Estopare, Kianka and Davis each hit triples, setting a school record for three-baggers in a game.

Junior right-hander Julio De Pena (3-1) went 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs – two earned – and 11 hits for the win.

The Sand Sharks travel to Middle Georgia for a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday before hosting Fisher (Mass.) for doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.
