Hardeeville, SC-- For the fifth time in the last six matches, this rivalry match was decided by a one goal margin, and in what we've become accustomed to in recent history with SCAD Savannah (8-5-1, 3-3) 90 minutes would prove to be less than enough time to decide the match.
SCAD took the first 20 minutes of the match to go on the attack and force the pace of the play. As has been the norm for USCB, the back line played a tough opening 20 minutes and waited out the storm. The patience from the Sand Sharks proved to be what was needed, and when the opportunity presented itself to senior
MJ Orduna, she pressured high up the field and forced a turnover in the attacking third which landed on the open foot of
Sarah Withers who calmly placed the ball to the side of SCAD goalkeeper Elisa Dogor.
The Sand Sharks would have another quality opportunity just minutes later when sophomore
Rileigh Olsen forced Dogor to make a diving save to her left to keep the Bees within striking distance. USCB would then take the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The second half proved to be similar to the first, except the roles reversed, and the Sand Sharks took to the attack in the opening minutes. The best opportunity for the Sand Sharks came 4 minutes in when a
Hayley Pina service was just out of the reach of a breaking Olsen to the back post.
In much the same way USCB did in the first half, SCAD seemed to wait out the storm, and when the counter-attack was on in the 73rd minute, Briana Hunter found herself one-on-one with Sand Shark goalkeeperÂ
Moa Johansson and was able to finish the play.
Overtime is no stranger to this cross-river rivalry, and it was an exciting period, as short as it was, where both teams had an opportunity to finish the match off of a corner kick. The first opportunity fell to the Sand Sharks who were unable to control the ball after winning it inside the 18. The second opportunity went the way of SCAD, when Nikki Abel found herself alone inside the penalty mark after a poor clearance from the Sand Sharks. Abel made no mistake in ending the match in the 94th minute.
The USCB women's soccer team will look to regroup this Saturday for a homecoming tilt with Ave Maria University (Fla.) at 1 P.M. at Fin Land Field.
