»» The USCB softball team continues Sun Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at No. 14 Thomas. The Night Hawks lead the Sand Sharks by two games for fourth place in the Sun Conference standings.
»» USCB has faced a difficult early-season schedule. The Sand Sharks are 4-9 against current Top-25 opponents with wins over No. 6 Campbellsville and No. 7 William Carey, and losses to No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett (twice), No. 9 Lindsey Wilson, No. 12 Reinhardt and No. 23 Mobile (twice). USCB split a doubleheader split with No. 22 Rio Grande and won one of three games against No. 11 Southeastern.
»» Sophomore OF Kayla Boyle had a program-best 20-game hitting streak earlier this season and has hit safely in 36 of the Sand Sharks' 42 games.
»» Senior 2B Marissa Becker leads the team with 17 multi-hit games, including eight contests with three or more hits. Becker's 60 hits this season are tied for fifth on USCB's single-season list.
»» Becker has a team-high 14 stolen bases this season and 47 in her career, surpassing Sammi Shaffren (43) for USCB's all-time lead. Becker also holds the USCB records for triples in a season (6) and career (9).
»» Sophomore P Abby Pac's 119 strikeouts this season rank sixth on USCB's single-season list. Ashlie Layman is fifth with 128 in 2014.
»» USCB has a young squad again in 2017 with nine sophomores and eight freshmen on the roster. Only three of the Sand Sharks' 20 players are upperclassmen.
»» The Sand Sharks have collected 45 stolen bases in 42 games after swiping 53 in 55 games a year ago. Becker (14) and freshman OF Brittany Olean (9) lead USCB on the bases.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Night Hawks have put together an outstanding season but have lost two of their last three Sun Conference series after dropping two of three at No. 11 Southeastern last weekend. Thomas is one of the most aggressive teams in the nation on the bases, ranking fourth in the NAIA in steal attempts per game (3.4) and stolen bases (109). C Kelsey Connolly (.414 BA, 9 HR, 47 RBIs) and OF Brittany Daniels (.408 BA, 2 HR, 28 RBIs, 14 SBs) lead a potent offense, while Lauren West (16-4, 2.45 ERA) is the ace of the pitching staff.
