@USCBSoccer Blanks Middle Georgia 5-0

The USCB soccer team used a four-goal blitz in the first 18 minutes to take control early and claim a 5-0 win over visiting Middle Georgia on Saturday at Fin Land Field.

The game originally was scheduled for Friday night but was postponed because of thunderstorms. The layoff didn't affect the Sand Sharks, who opened the scoring in the 10th minute and put up four goals in a nine-minute span.

"I'm proud of the team today," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "We could have come out flat, but we came out strong and set the tone early."

Brooke Newman bent a corner kick past the near post to open the scoring, and Elin Sturesson set up Daniella Borjas for a right-footed strike and a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute. Less than two minutes later, Karen Pimentel slid a pass through to MJ Orduna, who blasted a shot past diving goalkeeper Brooke Best, and Sturesson finished a cross from Hayley Pina to end the flurry in the 19th minute.

The Knights dug in for the rest of the half and kept the Sand Sharks off the board until the 64th minute, when Pina put in a volley off a corner kick from Hanna Crist for the final margin.

USCB outshot Middle Georgia 23-8 and had 16 shots on goal to the Knights' six. Center backs Newman and Brittney Neser were dominant in helping junior transfer Courtney Sherry post a shutout in her USCB debut.

"I was happy we were able to control most of the game, but give Middle Georgia credit for their fight late in both halves," Heberling said. "We have a short turnaround time to be ready for a very talented Georgetown team."

USCB hosts Georgetown (Ky.) at noon Sunday.
