Bluffton, SC—The 2018 Sand Shark Softball team takes to the field this Saturday and Sunday in two double-header contests. USCB will host Columbia College (S.C.) Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. and then again on Sunday afternoon when they host Montreat College (N.C.) beginning at 1 p.m.
The 2018, or #TEAM7, is looking forward to getting off on a strong note. Coach Laura Heberling said about her team's preparation for the opening weekend, "We are looking forward to taking the field this weekend and competing right away! We have worked really hard in the offseason and preseason and are ready to show it this spring. We look forward to seeing all our fans out in Hardeeville this weekend."
USCB faces a Columbia College team who finished 11th in the Appalachian Athletic Conference a year ago, going 6-24 (3-17 AAC). The Koalas are led by seniors Morgan Smith and Taylor Rawl. Smith contributed 32 hits and a team-high 12 RBI's on the season, while Rawl led the team in hits with 38. In the all-time series with Columbia College, USCB is 4-1 at home and leads overall 9-2.
#TEAM7 will then face a young, up-and-coming Montreat College (N.C.) team on Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers finished 9th in the Appalachian Athletic Conference last season, going 15-36 overall and 6-14 in AAC play. The Cavaliers are led by sophomores Mikki Shelton and Cailin Warner. A year ago Shelton had a team-high 52 hits and 8 stolen bases, while Warner contributed a team-leading 21 RBI's. Against Montreat, the Sand Sharks hold an 8-0 advantage in the all-time series.
