Bluffton, SC -- Senior
Melissa Fichtner couldn't have chosen a better time to score her first goal of the season. With her team heavily outshot by the visiting St. Thomas University (Fla.) Bobcats, Fichtner took a perfectly played ball from
Anna Gignilliat and fired it over the head of goalkeeper Veronica Gonzalez to secure a double-overtime victory for USCB.
In a first half where St. Thomas dominated the shot chart,
Logan Leask continued to deliver for USCB in the net. Leask's parry in the final minutes of the first half sparked the team to life. The momentum carried through halftime and into the second half where the Sand Sharks took control of the pace, putting three shots on target and earning two corners in the first 10 minutes of play. The game eventually settled into a back-and-forth the rest of the way and into overtime.
The first overtime was all Bobcats. The visitors had the advantage in shots 6-0, but Leask continued her strong performance.
In the 104th minute, a long ball forward was perfectly flicked on by Gignilliat into the path of Fichtner, who fought off the Bobcat defenders, and put the ball away to end the game.
After the game, coach
Jay Harris noted, "This was a great win against a good St. Thomas team. We have lost a couple of close ones to Warner and Thomas, but we showed our resilience in getting the win today. It was a great team effort, and this will build confidence and belief moving into the back end of conference play."
The Sand Sharks will host SCAD Savannah on Wednesday, October 10. Kick off is set for 4:00 pm.
