Hardeeville, SC-- The USCB baseball team split the opening double-header with College of St. Joseph this afternoon at Richard Gray Sports Complex, winning game one 10-5 and dropping game two 1-3.
The Sand Sharks grabbed the early 1-0 lead in game one in the bottom of the first when
Tristan Triplett grabbed the RBI in a groundout to short stop, scoring
Cole Hamilton. The team then powered ahead with a four-run third inning after a big three-run triple from
Kelvin Brito to left center that scored
Noah Matthews,
Chris Vazquez and Triplett.
The Sand Sharks then used a three-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach for the Fighting Saints. Brito was able to make his way to second off a fielding error by the second baseman and the same sequence scored Matthews and Vazquez.
Keith Olmo then found an RBI on his groundout to second base that scored Brito.
On the mound
Daniel Wagner threw 6.0 innings, giving up 11 hits, 5 runs and struck out two.
In game two it was a battle of pitching between the Sand Sharks'
Ryan Reynolds and the Fighting Saints' Zachery Mattos. Each pitcher threw the complete game, with Reynolds giving up five hits, three runs and striking out six.
On the other side of the plate, the Sand Sharks found their lone run in the fifth inning when Hamilton was able to score on a balk from Mattos.
The Sand Sharks will face the Fighting Saints again tomorrow for another double-header set to begin at 10 am, due to inclement weather threatening in the afternoon.
