Box Score Black Mountain, NC— The moment of brilliance came with minutes remaining in the second overtime period.
Camilla Lazoski found herself over the ball deep in the corner of the Cavaliers' end before spinning around to find fellow senior
Melissa Fichtner, who was able to slip a ball through the Montreat backline to
Hannah Salus who put away the game-winner.
In a game where the midfield of the Sand Sharks had a field day, controlling much of the game in terms of possession, USCB struggled to find the spark of magic in the final third.
A scoreless first half saw plenty of opportunities for the Sand Sharks to strike, including 9 corner kicks and Fichtner's rocket off the right post with 10 minutes remaining in the half.
The second half saw much of the same from USCB, a dominating performance, where they posted 12 more shots, seven of them finding their way on target.
After the game, interim coach
Jay Harris noted, "It was hard-fought win, and Montreat made us earn it. They are a well-coached team, and although we controlled the game, they made it difficult for us in the final third. It's great to get the win after pushing the pace of the game, and this will give us confidence moving forward."
Picking up her first clean sheet as a Sand Shark was
Logan Leask, who faced five shots on the evening, making three saves.
USCB is now looking forward to hosting their home opener Friday, August 31, when Faulkner University comes to town. Game time is set for 5:00 pm.
