Bluffton, SC-- The USCB women's soccer team has finished their final preparations for their home-opener tomorrow evening. The Sand Sharks will welcome the Eagles of Faulkner University (Ala.) in what looks to be an exciting matchup. Kickoff for the contest is slated for 5:00 PM at Fin Land Field, on the Bluffton Campus.
The Sand Sharks take the field today coming off a 1-0 win over Montreat College (N.C.) last Saturday in double overtime. The win at Montreat marks the Sand Sharks' first win of the 2018 campaign and second-straight win over Montreat in as many contests.
USCB, and interim head coach Jay Harris, will need to find a way to produce offensively this season after losing Hayley Pina, who is the program-record-holder in several offensive categories for the Sand Sharks, to graduation last spring. The team will lean heavily on the leadership of senior Melissa Fichtner and sophomore Allison Schaffer in the center of the park, while also looking to Brittney Neser and Logan Leask to help keep opponents out of the net. Offensively, it will require a team effort to produce in the final third--a task that has proved difficult in the early parts of this season.
Today the Sand Sharks face a Faulkner University team who is coming off a 1-3 loss at home to Sun Conference foe, Webber International (Fla.) last Saturday.
This year's Eagles are led by first-year head coach Pritchard Ndaria--a former standout goalkeeper for the men's soccer team at Faulkner. Ndaria will look to starting goalkeeper Rakeema Najiy to help tighten up a defense that surrendered 65 goals a year ago. Najiy served as primary backup last year where she saw action in three matches.
The Eagles will also have to replace leading goal-scorer Kayla Wilson, who graduated last spring. Wilson netted 11 goals a season ago, so it will be important for the team to find that threat up top.
Tomorrow's match will be broadcast on the Beuafort County Channel. Live stats will be available at: uscbathletics.com/live.
