Bluffton, SC-- A three-goal second half propelled the Sand Sharks past the Eagles of Faulkner University (Ala.) this evening at Fin Land Field. The 3-1 win was an exclamation point on a strong start for the USCB women's soccer team.
Despite a dominating possession-oriented attack, the game remained scoreless at half--a half in which the Sand Sharks launched 13 shots but only two forced Eagles' goalkeeper Rakeema Najiy to make a save.
The second half began with both teams opening up the play a bit, pushing their forward lines higher on the backs to force turnovers. It took all of 2 minutes and 28 seconds for the Eagles to strike first. A high-pressing Rebeka Pasikazia forced a turner in the Sand Sharks' end before she collected it and put inside the far post to put Faulkner on top.
It took less than three minutes for USCB to counter the goal when
Hannah Salus found space inside the six-yard box and headed a
Camilla Lazoski cross into the side netting.
With the game back under the control of the home team, and the shots beginning to pile up, it was
Rileigh Olsen who broke through next for USCB. Her unassisted shot from the left corner of the box sailed into the upper corner and it was USCB from there. The Sand Sharks held the Eagles shotless for the remainder of the match.
Salus ended the scoring by finishing off a
Melissa Fichtner cross from deep on the end line to seal the victory for USCB.
The Sand Sharks improved to 2-1 on the season. The team will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they host Brenau University (Ga.) for a 12:00 PM kickoff. The Golden Tigers played Sun Conference rival SCAD Savannah tonight where they upended by the Bees 7-0.
