Sand Sharks Square Off With Border Rival SCAD on Wednesday

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - To conclude a two-game road trip, USCB women's soccer will make the short trek to SCAD to square off with the Bees on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the SCAD Athletics Complex at 6 p.m. 

About USCB

USCB makes the short trek to SCAD on Wednesday with a 7-6 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Sun Conference matches. The Sand Sharks dropped its most recent road matchup to St. Thomas and are 4-5 in matches away from Fin Land Field.

In the 2-1 loss to the Bobcats, it was a defensive struggle for both squads, as USCB and STU combined for just 10 shots. STU scored the first goal in the third minute, but Gabriella Baldo answered in the 33rd minute to tie the game. However, St. Thomas tallied the game-winner in the 75th minute and held USCB off the scoreboard for the final 15 minutes.

Anna Gignilliat, who has scored in three of the last four games, leads the team in goals with 14. Overall this year, she has tallied a goal in seven of the 14 games. Highlighting her senior campaign was recording two four-goal performances - at Erskine and versus Warner. 

Aside from Gignilliat, there are seven other Sand Sharks that have recorded multiple goals this season - Lexi Kaeser, Allison Schaffer, Julia Gherardi, Baldo, Brooke Newman, Hannah Salus and Mina Ljosland. Those eight Sand Sharks have combined for 36 of the team's 39 goals scored this year. 

As a team, USCB has outscored, 39-22, and outshot the opposition, 182-130. It has also put 38 more shots on goal than the opposition. In TSC matches, USCB has tallied three more goals on 10 fewer shots than TSC rivals. 

Scouting SCAD

SCAD hosts USCB with a 6-5-1 overall mark and a 3-2-1 record in Sun Conference action. In their last five games, the Bees are 3-1-1 with wins over Warner, Florida Memorial and Thomas. The only game they lost was to No. 1 Keiser, 2-0, on the road. At home, the Bees are a respectable 3-2. 

The Bees are a tough defensive team, as they have only allowed 17 goals in 12 games this year (1.4 goals against). They have also held opponents to a 0.092 shot percentage and a 0.47 shots on goal percentage. 

The SCAD offense is led by Sam Manelis, who has tallied 10 goals in 11 starts. She has taken 37 total shots and put 20 of those on frame. Manelis also has a team-best two game-winning goals to her name as well. The next offensive threat is Natalia Zapata. She has played in all 12 games and has posted five goals and an assist. She is second on the team in shots (18), points (11) and shots on goal (12). Annie Sullivan has a team-best seven assists in nine starts in 2019. 

Elisa Dogor is SCAD's main goalkeeper, as she has started 11 of the 12 matches this year. She has surpassed 1,000 minutes in net and totes a strong 1.51 goals against average. She has faced 116 shots and has made 71 saves.

What's Next?

USCB will play its second-to-last home game on Saturday, Oct. 26, as it hosts Ave Maria in a key conference matchup. Kickoff from Fin Land Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
