Game Recap: Baseball |

Wenthe Smacks Two Home Runs in Road Losses at No. 25 Webber International

BABSON PARK, Fla. - Despite two home runs from Bobby Wenthe on Saturday, the USCB baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 12-2 and 12-8, to No. 25 Webber International at the Heart of Florida Field.

INSIDE THE GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Wenthe - 3-for-4, solo home run, two singles

Eight different Sand Sharks had at least one hit

Zach Demchenko - four innings, one earned run, four hits, two strikeouts

Harrison Bell - 1.1 innings, no runs, no hits, no walks

HOW GAME ONE HAPPENED

Webber International used early offense to take the lead. The Warriors collected six runs in the first inning to take the 6-0 advantage. After a one-run second frame, WIU added on four more runs in the third to account for the 11 runs scored.

USCB tried to mount a comeback in the middle of the game. Kevin Smith plated the Sand Shark's first run on a groundout in the fourth, and Wenthe followed in the fifth inning with a solo blast to center field.

Up 11-2, Webber International added a run in the home half of the fifth.

WIU used two pitchers - Doug Pearl and Joey Cutrone - in the victory. Pearl tossed six innings, while Cutrone pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

INSIDE THE GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Wenthe - 2-for-3, three RBIs, double, two-run home run, two runs, two walks

Robbie McKinney - 3-for-5, three singles, one RBI, two runs

Tavaris Terrell - 3-for-5, double, one RBI

Cole Hamilton - 2-for-6, double, two runs

Marino Sorbara - 2-for-5, two singles
Nine Sand Sharks had hits, including five players with multiple hits

Ryan Pedersen - one inning, one hit, no earned runs

HOW GAME TWO HAPPENED

Hamilton tried to start a rally in the first inning, as the senior connected with a double to left field. He eventually moved to third with two outs, but he was left stranded there.

Webber International took advantage in the bottom of the first, as it tallied four runs off four hits. Carlo Mancillas had a three-RBI double for WIU, while Quinsly Balentien posted a two-out, RBI single.

After a scoreless second inning, USCB cut the deficit in half thanks to a Wenthe two-out, two-run home run. The homer to center field extended his school career home run record to 22. The two-run shot also brought his season total to nine.

WIU extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run frame. All three of the runs were scored on Sand Shark defensive miscues.

Despite being down by five runs (7-2), the Sand Sharks had a big fifth inning to knot the game at 7-all. Smith started the rally with a leadoff single to center. After an error, McKinney and Wenthe posted back-to-back, run-scoring base hits. After a strikeout, the Sand Sharks took advantage of another Warrior error to make it a 7-5 game. With two outs, Terrell and Sorbara each smacked RBI singles to tie the game at 7-apiece.

In the bottom of the fifth, WIU regained the lead with a lone, unearned run.

However, the Sand Sharks quickly retaliated in the top of the sixth to knot the game for a second time, 8-8. Hamilton and Wenthe reached base safely to put two Sand Sharks on base, and David Villafane made it hurt with a RBI single.

The Warrior offense didn't stop there, as it scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to seal the four-run win, 12-8.
