USCB Begins Three-Game Road Swing at Erskine on Monday

DUE WEST, S.C. - After a dominating 4-0 victory over NCAA Division I South Carolina State to open the season, USCB soccer begins a three-game road swing on Monday, Aug. 19 with a trip to Erskine for a non-conference bout. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Huggins Field.

About USCB

The Sand Sharks opened the 2019 campaign in dominating fashion, as they downed SCSU, 4-0. Hannah Salus netted a pair of goals for USCB, which brought her career total to eight.  Anna Gignilliat scored the final goal of the match, which raised her career total to nine. That places her seventh in all-time career goals scored at USCB. To wrap up the scoring, Lexi Kaeser tallied the first goal of the season and the first of her collegiate career.

In the season opener, 19 players saw action in the contest. Of those 19 players, 10 were freshmen, and half of the freshmen were in the starting lineup.

The three-game road swing is the longest away stretch since the 2016 season when the Sand Sharks played five straight road contests. USCB went 3-2 in that stretch with wins over Middle Georgia, Columbia International and Ave Maria. In that same five-game stretch, the Sand Sharks tallied 11 goals (2.2 goals per game average).

Scouting Erskine

Monday's game will be considered an exhibition for the Fleet, as their season officially begins on Sept. 6 versus the University of Alabama Huntsville. Erskine starts conference play early (Sept. 14), as it will square off with Conference Carolinas rival North Greenville.

Last year, the Fleet finished the season 6-10-1 overall and 5-5-1 in league play. Erskine fell in the opening round of the conference tournament, as it lost, 1-0, to Belmont Abbey.

The Fleet's top scorer from a year ago - Devyn Cabral - returns to the roster in 2019. The Land O Lakes, Fla. native finished the 2018 season with four goals in 16 starts. Erskine only had four players with multiple goals scored last year but also had 11 total players find the back of the net a year ago.

Erskine lost its key goalkeeper - Sara Dooley - as she finished last year with a 1.64 goals against average. In 16 starts, Dooley played over 1,426 minutes between the posts and recorded 78 total saves.
