SPARTANBURG, S.C. - To conclude a three-game road swing, USCB soccer will travel to Converse College to square off with the Valkyries on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m.
About USCB
The Sand Sharks are off to their hottest start in program history, as they are 3-0 for the 2019 season. In the three-game stretch, USCB has pitched a trio of shutouts and has netted 13 goals.Â
Leading the offensive surge is senior Anna Gignilliat, who leads the entire NAIA with six goals scored. In fact, she is already seventh in all-time USCB history for goals scored in a single season.Â
In the last two games, Gignilliat netted five total goals, including a four-goal contest at Erskine. That four-goal game broke a school single-game record in goals scored and points (eight). For her performance last week, she earned USCB's second-ever Sun Conference Offensive Player of the Week award.
On the 13 goals scored this year, USCB has earned nine assists from eight different players. The only player to earn multiple assists is Julia Gherardi with two.
On the other side of the ball, USCB is already tied for fourth all-time in school history for single-season shutouts (three). Between goalkeepers Logan Leask and Moa Johansson, the two Sand Sharks have been unstoppable in net. They have faced 13 shots this year and have earned six saves.Â
Scouting Converse
The Valkyries have played two games this year, both exhibitions. Most recently, Converse ended in a 1-1 tie to Brevard on Saturday.
Converse lost three key goal scorers from a year ago in Melissa Carlyle, Hallie Lycans and Cassidy Marshall. Between the three Valkyries, the trio combined for 10 of the team's 16 goals last year.Â
Converse does return one offensive threat from last year in A.C. Albritton, as the current junior tallied a pair of goals during the 2018 campaign.Â
Another key returner for Converse is its starting goalkeeper - Darian Bankston. The current junior started all 15 games last year and totaled over 1,363 minutes between the posts. She finished the season with 97 saves and a .664 save percentage.Â
