Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sand Sharks Score First But Fall to Nationally-Ranked Georgia Gwinnett on Sunday

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Despite scoring first, USCB women's soccer suffered its first loss of the season to No. 17 Georgia Gwinnett, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Grizzly Soccer Complex.

Inside The Box Score

Gabriella Baldo - one goal, second of career at USCB

Teyah Lindo - one assist, first point of career at USCB, team-leading three shots at GGC

Logan Leask - three saves

How It Happened

The Sand Sharks started the game on fire, as they have continued their dominance in earlier contests. Lindo earned the possession at the midfield, and she fed a through ball to Baldo on the right side of the pitch. Baldo then ripped a shot that snuck past the GGC goalkeeper and found the left side of the net. Baldo's goal was the second of the year for the junior and put USCB up, 1-0, in the second minute.

Unfortunately a minute later, No. 17 Georgia Gwinnett knotted the game up, as Jenny Stadin netted the game-tying goal for the Grizzlies.

USCB had another key chance in the 10th minute, as Baldo had a one-versus-one chance with the GGC goalkeeper. Baldo corralled a cross from a teammate, and she connected with a left-footed shot. However, the attempt went right into the hands of the goalkeeper.

In the 11th minute, nationally-ranked Georgia Gwinnett earned its first lead of the contest off a set piece. Von Kaenel took the corner from the left side of the field. She lofted a pass into the 18-yard box and eventually found Joy Mertzig. Mertzig took a shot and gave the Grizzlies the 2-1 advantage.

USCB had two more solid chances at goal in the 16th and 35th minutes, as Lindo and Madeline Matusik each took shots on frame. However, both attempts were saved.

At the halftime break, Georgia Gwinnett continued to cling to its one-goal lead, 2-1, despite USCB leading in shots, 7-5.

The Grizzlies added an insurance goal three minutes into the second half, as they extended their lead to 3-1. Kyara Armenta tallied the goal for GGC and pushed the lead to two.

USCB had several chances at goal in the second half. Raleigh Olsen had two of those opportunities, but both shots on goal were saved.
