NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - To open Sun Conference action, USCB women's soccer travels to Johnson & Wales for the TSC Game of the Week on Saturday, Sept. 28 at noon.
About USCB
The Sand Sharks open league action with a 4-3 overall mark. Of the seven matches this year, six have been played on the road, and USCB is 3-3 in such games. USCB's lone home win this year was the season opener against South Carolina State, where the Sand Sharks won, 4-0.
In USCB's last contest (at Francis Marion), the Sand Sharks fell in double overtime to the NCAA Division II opponent, 2-1. It was USCB's first overtime match this year, as the contest was decided in the 104th minute. The Sand Shark's game-tying goal came in the 48th minute, when Allison Schaffer connected on her third penalty kick goal of the year.
In road games this year, USCB has outscored its opposition, 20-10, and has pitched a pair of shutout wins - at Erskine and at Georgia Southwestern. Anna Gignilliat leads the team in road goals with six, but Schaffer and Brooke Newman are right behind their teammate with three goals each. Overall, nine different Sand Sharks have found the back of the net in road games this season.
Scouting Johnson & Wales
The Wildcats are off to hot start in 2019 at 5-1 on the year. Similar to USCB, Johnson & Wales has only played one home contest this year, where the Wildcats won, 4-0, over conference rival Ave Maria.
Johnson & Wales has been a force offensively, as it is averaging 4.5 goals per contest while only allowing 1.67 goals per game.
Individually, Johnson & Wales' key player is Savannah Jackson. The junior forward currently leads the nation in goal scored (22), goals per game (3.67), game-winning goals (5), total points (44), points per game (7.3) and shots on goal per game (6.17). This year Jackson has scored at least two goals in all six games and has tallied four goals or more in four contests this year.
Aside from Jackson, Johnson & Wales has four other goal scorers. Sawyer Hall is one of two Wildcats to score multiple goals this year. Hall is also second on the squad in points with seven and has put eight shots on goal. Tyler Einsmann is also another key player, as she has six of the team's 27 assists this season.
Between the posts, Denise Mendoza will get the start, as she has started all six matches this year. She has allowed 10 goals in that stretch for a 1.67 goals against average. She has corralled 28 total saves and totes a .737 save percentage.
