Soccer Looks To Defend Home Field on Wednesday Against No. 4 Southeastern

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Sporting a 3-0 record at home, the USCB women's soccer team will look to defend its home field, as it faces off with No. 4 Southeastern on Oct. 28 at Fin Land Field for an 11 a.m. kickoff.

About USCB

The Sand Sharks welcome nationally-ranked Southeastern to Fin Land Field with a 3-2 overall record and a 3-2 mark in Sun Conference games. USCB is currently undefeated at home, 3-0, as it has upended Webber International, Warner and St. Thomas at Fin Land Field.

In USCB's last game, the Sand Sharks dropped a heartbreaker on the road to Ave Maria, 2-1, in double overtime. Madeline Matusik scored the game's first goal in the 49th minute, but Ave Maria tallied the game-tying goal in the 78th minute and eventually the game-winning goal in the 107th minute. The Sand Sharks outshot the Gyrenes, 12-9, in the game, including a 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.

On the year, Marcela Shartouny leads the USCB offense, as the freshman midfielder has three goals, one assist and seven points. Matusik is the only other Sand Shark that has multiple goals this year, as she has found the back of the net against AMU and Webber International. Aurya Downey is the only Sand Shark with multiple assists, as the rookie midfielder as three.

Mariah Ruckdeschel has started in four of the five games in net for the Sand Sharks. She has totaled over 376 minutes between the pipes and totes a strong 1.2 goals against average. She has corralled 24 saves en route to a .828 save percentage.

Scouting Southeastern

The nationally-ranked Fire club is currently undefeated at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in league games. They have played most of their games at home and are 5-0 at the SEU Soccer Field. SEU has played just three contests on the road, as it sports an unblemished 3-0 record.

Southeastern is strong on both sides of the ball, as it has tallied 35 goals in eight games (4.38 goals per game) and has allowed just three goals all year (0.38 goals allowed per game). The Fire have outshot their opponents by 135 shots (200-65), including 74 shots on goal (100-26).

Leading the offense is Aisha Solorzano and Naira Lopez. Solorzano has a team-best 11 goals this year, but Lopez leads the squad with a team-leading 10 assists and 24 points. Also finding the back of the net often for the Fire is Anne-Clara Couturier, as she has recorded six goals in six starts. 

Holly Eddins has been the leader on defense, as the five-time Sun Conference Defender of the Week is 8-0 in 2020. She has totaled 690 minutes in net and has allowed all three of SEU's goals. She has a stellar 0.39 goals against average and has four shutouts this year. In the last three games though, Eddins has faced double-digit shots, including a season-high 24 shots against Keiser.

What's Next?

USCB will conclude the regular season with three straight conference road games. Kicking off that road stretch is a league bout with Webber International on Nov. 2 at Babson Park, Fla. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Warrior Grass Field.
