HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started fast, as both Florida Memorial and USCB plated runs in the first two innings. Florida Memorial totaled four runs in the first two frames, but USCB outscored the league rival by three runs in the first two frames, 7-4.
In the first inning, Humphrey roped a single to second, and Olmo scored on a throwing error by the Lion second baseman. USCB made it a one-run game in the first, when Sellers connected with a run-scoring single to short.Â
In the next inning, Kevin Smith scored Matthews thanks to a fielding error by the FMU third baseman. Three pitches later, Tavaris Terrell touched home via a Lion wild pitch. To pull ahead for the first time in the game, Humphrey smoked a single to short to plate Justin Owen from third. To end the scoring in the second frame, Sellers cracked a two-RBI double down the left field line to advance the Sand Shark lead to 7-4.
Florida Memorial added another run in the third, but USCB tacked on three runs in the fourth to push its lead to 10-5. Castro and Humphrey started the rally with back-to-back singles, and Sellers made it hurt with a two-RBI single. Milhan then followed suit with a single, as all three runs in the frame were scored with two outs.Â
The Lions tried to mount a comeback, but USCB used a pair of relievers - Cam Mathis and Copley - to seal the two-run win, 10-8. Mathis and Copley tossed the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one run and no hits to end the contest.
