HOW IT HAPPENED
The first three innings were a pitching duel between USCB's Minick and CIU's Trent Polly.Â
USCB had a chance to plate runs in the first frame, as Castro and Russ connected with back-to-back, one-out hits. Unfortunately, the next two Sand Sharks went down in order to leave them stranded.Â
CIU broke the scoreless tie in the middle innings with a run in the fourth and fifth innings. Kody Trujillo plated the run in the fourth, and Buddy Bleasedale touched home on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Again, USCB tried to plate runs in the sixth when Castro and Russ connected with two straight singles, but they were left stranded.
In the next inning though, USCB's offense erupted for eight runs to take the six-run lead. The inning started with two straight errors, and Hunter McKown made it hurt with a run-scoring double to make it a one-run game. After a strikeout, Sellers plated two runs off a ringing double to right center. Up 3-2, Terrell and Milhan added to the lead with back-to-back doubles to make the game 6-2. Following singles from Kennedy and Thibodeaux and a fielding error from CIU, USCB took the lead, 8-2.Â
Krieghauser went back out to pitch the eighth, and he cruised through the Rams lineup with just 10 pitches, as he set USCB up to put the game away in the bottom of the eighth.
The Sand Shark offense did just that with a four-run eighth inning. Sellers, Castro and Terrell all reached back safely to force the bases loaded, and Milhan smacked a double to right center to make the game 10-2. After a pitching change, Terrell touched home, and Tim Wood ended the game with a double to right center, 12-2.Â
