HOW IT HAPPENED
After leaving two Fire players on base in the first, USCB took its first lead of the day with a pair of runs. Sellers and Meyer started the frame with back-to-back singles, and after a fly out to put both Sand Sharks in scoring position, Russ cracked a single to left to take the 2-0 lead.
Southeastern quickly answered with six runs in the top of the second to take the 6-2 lead.
In the home half of the second, USCB plated four runs to knot the game at 6-all. Geelen worked a one-out single, and Sellers followed with a walk. Meyer forced the bases loaded, as he reached base on an error. Castro scored two off a double down the left field line. After a pitching change, Russ grounded out to make it a 6-5 game. Humphrey tied the game with two outs with a single through the right side to account for the four-run second inning.Â
Both teams had a scoreless third inning, and both ball clubs exchanged a run in the fourth to make it a 7-7 game. Russ accounted for USCB's run with a RBI double.
Following another scoreless frame, the nationally-ranked Fire took their second lead of the day, 8-7, in the top of the sixth.
USCB struggled to find offense in the seventh and eighth innings, but in the ninth inning, the Sand Sharks tied the contest up again. After two quick outs, Humphrey singled, and Milhan doubled to right center to put two runners on base. Tavaris Terrell walked to force the bases loaded. Hunter McKown came in to pinch hit, and the junior drew a six-pitch walk to tie the game. USCB had a chance to walk off in the ninth, but the final out was recorded on a fly out.
Heading into the 10th, MacPherson walked the first batter, but he was able to induce a double play to get out of the inning unscathed.Â
Sellers started the 10th-inning rally by reaching base on a fielding error. Meyer followed with a single through the right side, and Castro was intentionally walked to force the bases loaded with no outs. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Russ connected with the game-winning sac fly to left to lift USCB to victory, 9-8.Â
