Sand Sharks push #18 Flagler to final minute, fall 4-3

ST. AUGUSTINE -- A highly-controversial call that would've been USCB's equalizer was called back, allowing Flagler to squeak out a 4-3 win over the Sand Sharks Wednesday afternoon in St. Augustine.

Jenny Hesby and a Flagler defender went up for a loose ball after the Saints goalkeeper was caught out of position and the sophomore midfielder headed in what would've been her second goal of the game, but the referee called it off as USCB's bench was celebrating the would-be game-tying goal.

A second game-changing call was made minutes later as Hesby was called for being offsides as she was on a breakaway with a chance to tie the game following the called back goal.

"A high-level performance pushing one of the best teams in the country to the final whistle," said coach Jay Harris Our execution in many facets of the game were great, but they are a top team who will also punish you if you make mistakes.

The Saints pushed across the first goal just four minutes into the game, but Beaufort netted the equalizer in the 23rd minute after Mari Kalvatn sent a cross to a streaking Savanna Page who went 1-v-1 with the keeper, finding the back of the net after her shot deflected off the crossbar.

Flagler put more goals on the board over the course of nine minutes to make it 3-1 but it was Hesby who put it back to a one score game picking up a cross from Kennedy Harris and the Sandefjord, Norway scored her sixth goal of the year to make it 3-2.

USCB put together multiple opportunities in the first 15 minutes of the second half but couldn't convert. The Saints made it 4-2 in the 58th minute after Paige Churchill finished the hat trick. In the 76th minute Hesby was fouled inside the box and Synne Bye-Andersen took the penalty, finding the back of the net making it 4-3.

Beaufort kept the pressure on for the remainder of the match but couldn't push across the equalizer giving Flagler the win.

The Sand Sharks continue the Peach Belt road trip as they'll head to Greenwood for a contest with the Lander Bearcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
