BLUFFTON -- USCB held a five point lead heading into the fourth quarter but the Sand Sharks only scored three points in the period and the Tigers caught fire, shooting 50 percent from the field to hand the Sand Sharks its first home loss, falling 59-47 Saturday afternoon.
"We played well for three quarters," said head coach Sharon Versyp. "Just couldn't get anything going in the fourth. Voorhees was so aggressive the last quarter and we struggled with the pressure, but we'll continue to learn game-by-game with this group and get better as the season progresses."
Janiyah Heyward led the way for Beaufort, posting 17 points, five boards, and two steals. Shaniya Rose had eight points and eight board while Brielle Bartelt made her season debut and scored six points off the bench in 19 minutes.
Each team knocked down triples as their first points and would be tied midway though the period. Arei'a Garrett made it a four-point USCB advantage after picking up her own rebound and putting it back. Jada Young made both ends from the charity stripe, but Ty'shemia Bunkley sunk a three-ball as the buzzer sounded to make it a two-point game,
Back-to-back triples to open the quarter gave Voorhees a two-point advantage. Buckets from Taniyah Bowman and Heyward gave USCB the lead with under four minutes remaining in the half, but the Tigers scored off an offensive board to go up one, however, Heyward put the Sand Sharks up 27-26 with 11 seconds remaining.
Heyward had the hot hand in the third period, scoring on first consecutive times before Bartelt drilled one from down town, extending USCB's lead to 40-36. The Savannah native continued to shine, picking up two more scores giving the Sand Sharks a five point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
It was all Voorhees in the final period as the Tigers outscored USCB 20-3 and take the game 59-47.
The Sand Sharks will begin the "River Rivalry" with Savannah State University on Tuesday as the two teams meet in the Savannah Hoops Invitational at Enmarket Arena with tip-off schedules for 5:30 p.m.
