Defense shines, but USCB falls to Nighthawks

BLUFFTON -- For the first time in over two years, the Sand Sharks (4-1-2, 1-1 PBC) suffered a loss on their home pitch as USCB fell to North Georgia (6-1, 2-0 PBC) 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at Fin Land Field. It had been nearly two full years since Beaufort had a loss at home, the last also being at the hands of UNG, a 3-0 loss on Oct. 19 of 2022.

The Sand Sharks went a perfect 10-0 last season and ran its streak to 12-0 after picking up two wins to open the season. It is the longest home winning streak in program history.

"An incredible game for us on the defensive side of the ball," said interim head coach Dan Huff. "With a limited practice time this week I am really pleased with our performance. We had several opportunities but couldn't break through. We've got to do a better job of finding the back of the net."

Scoring chances for both teams were scarce. Synne Bye-Andersen took the first shot on goal for the Sand Sharks but it was right at the goalkeeper and Sophia Willis followed that up with one of her own, but Faith Bullied came up with the save. After two more shots were saved by the Nighthawks, Emily Worrell saw two shots come her way and made the saves.

The senior goalkeeper extended her scoreless streak to 318 minutes before the Nighthawks ended it by scoring on Worrell for the first time this season. After a quick throw-in, Darby Olive took the ball past the USCB backline and took the shot, where Worrell came up with the save, but Bailey Oetinger was there following up the shot and scored the go-ahead goal.

USCB continued to battle throughout the remainder of the second half, but the Nighthawks were able to thwart the Sand Sharks offensive chances and hold on to the 1-0 victory.

Beaufort has a quick turnaround as it'll host South Carolina State for a non-conference game tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played today, but due to Hurricane Helene was pushed back a day.
