Sand Sharks fall in back-and-forth effort versus Bucs

MIAMI SHORES -- Lydia Gattozzi led way for USCB with 17 points along with five boards, four steals, while dishing out two assists, but the Sand Sharks dropped a tough contest to the Barry Bucs Friday night 71-56 inside the Cesar Odio Court.

Brielle Bartelt contributed 14 points, and Ella Coffey posted a career-high 10 points.

Madison Self put USCB on top scoring on the first possession of the game, but as the quarter continued it was a back-and-forth battle with seven lead changes through the first 10 minutes. Barry scored the next four points to lead 16-12 after one quarter of play.  A 6-0 run opened the second period for the Sand Sharks, highlighted by Gattozzi's two buckets. The Bucs took the lead on a three-pointer by Audrey Jennings, but Beaufort's fought back despite being in foul trouble early in the second.

Bartelt's floater out of the media time out made the score 23-22 and Jada Young's jumper from just outside the paint put the Sand Sharks back in the lead. Jennings scored Barry's next five points as the Bucs took a four-point lead late in the half. Gattozzi picked off an errant pass and finished the fast break and Bartelt followed that up with a steal of her own and made the basket while also drawing the foul. She made the and-one and USCB held a three-point lead with under a minute to play in the half. Gattozzi was fouled as time expired, and the junior went 1-for-2 from the stripe to end the half up 32-31.

Beaufort opened the second half on a 6-0 run pushing its lead up to seven, but the Bucs continued to fight and tied the game midway through the period and then took the lead with two fast break opportunities off Sand Shark turnovers. Barry extended its lead in the opening minutes of the final frame with a triple from Kaliyah Morales. After Jennings completed the and-one the lead was eight with seven minutes remaining.

Coffey drained a triple from the wing to make it six-point game at the 4:49 mark and the Sand Sharks followed that up with another basket to make it 57-53. Jennings connected with her fourth three-pointer of the game thanks to a forgiving rim extending the Bucs lead late.

USCB returns home on Tuesday for a matchup against Barton College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Cove.
