Coffey, Gattozzi lead offense, Sand Sharks fall at home to Barton

BLUFFTON -- For the second straight game the back court combo of Ella Coffey and Lydia Gattozzi led the way for a USCB women's team marred by injuries in the early part of the season. The lack of depth again hurt the Sand Sharks offense as Beaufort fell to visiting Barton 60-47 inside the Cove Tuesday night.

Gattozzi racked up a team-high 16 points and Coffey scored 10 in double-figures for the second consecutive game. Shaniya Rose and Madison Self were a forced to be reckoned with on the glass with both players each picking up seven caroms.

The game started with a scoreless run through the first two plus minutes, but the Bulldogs used a 7-0 to capture an early advantage. Field goals from Brielle Bartelt and Coffey knotted the game at seven but Barton connected on consecutive three-pointers to take a six-point lead into quarter two.

After exchanging buckets to open the period both teams went into a scoring drought over the next three minutes. Coffey hit her second triple of the half at the 5:29 marking it a four-point deficit. The Bulldogs fought back to extend the lead to eight as the half ended with the score 30-22.

USCB chipped away at the Bulldogs lead through the third period, making 32-28 at the media timeout. A few missed shots allowed Barton to capitalize and recapture its 10-point lead as the game went into the fourth quarter.
BC connected with a three-pointer to open the period but USCB's back court duo of Coffey and Gattozzi cut the Bulldog's lead back to single digits. Barton though continued to answer USCB's offensive scores and extended the lead to 13 with 1:20 remaining.

The Bulldogs held on to their 13-point lead and took the game with a score of 60-47.

Beaufort travels Augusta this Saturday to open Peach Belt Conference play with the Jaguars. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
