Sand Sharks fall in conference opener to Augusta

AUGUSTA -- USCB battled in a hard-fought conference opener versus Augusta, but ultimately fell to the Jaguars 72-50 Saturday afternoon inside the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Lydia Gattozzi led the way offensively for the Sand Sharks, racking up 17 points with six boards and Arie'a Garrett contributed eight points and six rebounds off the bench.

USCB opened with baskets from Gattozzi and  Shaniya Rose, but it was Elly Lewis' triple that cut the Jags lead midway through the period. After Augusta took an eight-point advantage with 2:52 left in the first, the Sand Sharks rattled off consecutive baskets making it a two-possession game.

The Buckeye state duo of Gattozzi and Garrett dominated the first three minutes of play in the second quarter. Garrett picked up a quick four points and Gattozzi drained a three-pointer to give Beaufort its first lead of the day and forcing an Augusta timeout. The lead was exchanged back-and-forth before AU went on a 7-0 to recapture the lead at 35-28 to end the half.

Turnovers hurt USCB as the second half began and the Jags took advantage, extending its lead to 14. Following a timeout, Beaufort went on a 6-0 run to trim the lead back to single digits, but AU countered with a triple and a layup as time expired to go up 51-40 after 30 minutes of play.

Beaufort continued to battle after falling behind by as many as 18 in the fourth. Turnovers continued to hurt the Sand Sharks and Augusta would counter every offensive attack, further extending its lead.

USCB travels to Virginia Beach on Dec. 17 for a contest with the Regent Royals. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
