Women's Basketball closes out 2024 with dominant W

VIRGINIA BEACH -- After having to deal with numerous injuries and a shallow bench for most of the season thus far, the Sand Sharks ended the 2024 portion of its season in impressive fashion claiming a dominant 88-32 victory over Regent Tuesday afternoon. The 56-point margin of victory is the largest in program history, surpassing last season's 33-point win over Paine College and the 32 points allowed is also a program best.

Lydia Gattozzi, Janiyah Heyward, and Elly Lewis all scored in double-figures led by Gattozzi's 19 points. Heyward presence was felt immediately as she produced a double-double, scoring 15 points to go with 10 boards while also dishing out five assists, recording four steals, and a block. Lewis set a career-high in points scored with 16 and knocked down a career-best three triples.

Gattozzi got the scoring started with a triple from the top of the key and USCB followed with a 14-0 through the first minutes of the game. Regent scored just six points in the quarter and Beaufort added another nine to take a 23-6 lead into the second period. The Sand Sharks pushed its lead to 20 as the quarter began after Gattozzi connected with her third three-pointer. A 9-4 run USCB run followed over the next four minutes and the Sand Sharks offense was clicking on all cylinders.

The route continued into the second half outscoring the Royals by nine in the third quarter and then by 19 in the fourth. USCB's defense shined throughout allowing Regent to only score in double-figures once; 15 points in the third period.

Beaufort will break for the holidays and return to action on Jan. 4 with its Peach Belt home opener against Clayton State.
