Gaines propels Sand Sharks to road win over Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK – After suffering its first loss of the year on Tuesday to Savannah State, USCB quickly righted the ship by picking up another road win, a 70-64 victory over Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon.

Kenney Gaines dropped a team-high 21 points, going 8-for-10 from the field. The senior out of Lake City, Florida added seven rebounds, three steals while dishing out two assists leading the Sand Sharks offense.

USCB's offense was clicking early. After both Paladugu and Sfanos connected on three-pointers, the Rock called a timeout to try and slow the run. The Sand Sharks held a one-point lead midway through the first half and then the lead changed on the next five possessions. SRU took a two-score lead but Beaufort rattled off an 8-0 run over 91 seconds to take a seven-point lead. But the Rock stormed back making it a one-point game. Ike Herster banked in a three-pointer to end the half with Slipeery Rock up 40-38.

Slippery Rock opened the second half on a 7-0 run, but the Sand Sharks quickly fought back to make it a two-score game at the first media timeout. Every time USCB battled back to within two-point game the Rock would, and Gaines tied the game with a putback layup and finished the and-one to recapture the lead for Beaufort. Dylan Lewis connected with a three-pointer late in the period and USCB iced the game by going 3-for-5 from the charity stripe to end the game 70-64.

The Sand Sharks continue its tour of the Keystone State as coach Ron Fudala returns to IUP on Monday for 6 p.m. matchup with his former team the Crimson Hawks.
