Gattozzi returns with splash, Sand Shark fall in season opener

BLUFFTON -- Lydia Gattozzi scored a team-high 14 points, but the Sand Sharks struggled from the field shooting just 32 percent and USCB fell 54-42 in the season opener Saturday afternoon in the Cove.

Sheridan Bostic got USCB on the board draining a long triple from the top of the key. Gattozzi and Rose each had four points in the quarter and at the end of 10 minutes the game was tied at 12. The game remained tied through the first two minutes of the second period, but it was the Knights that broke through as Katie Moore floated a basket in and made the end of the and one to give the SAU a three-point advantage.

St. Andrews extended the lead to as large as five with under 90 seconds to play in the half, but Madison Self's rebound and putback made it a three-point game again. Brianna Pelote cut the lead to one with a jumper as the teams went into the locker room.
The Knights opened on a 5-0 run through the first three minutes, but it was Kay'Mar Griffin who ended the scoreless run with a bucket just outside the paint. The Knights pushed the lead to 39-29 as the third quarter ended.  

St. Andrews pushed the lead up to double figures late in the fourth and the game ended with the Knights on top 54-42.

The Sand Sharks are back in action this Thursday against Allen University for Invest in Women's Sports Night at the Cove. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
