Men's Basketball falls in PBC opener to Jags

AUGUSTA -- A loud hostile environment was a bit too much for USCB to overcome as the Sand Sharks dropped its conference opener to the Augusta Jaguars 105-96 Wednesday afternoon on Columbia County Education Day.

Nolan Paladugu scored a game-high 18 points while five others scored in double-digits for Beaufort in the loss. Tasso Sfanos produced 15 points off the bench while Dominic Eason had 14. Kenney Gaines and Aljenadro Ralat each had 13 and Kyle Polce had 12 rounding out the Sand Sharks' offense.

The Christenberry Fieldhouse was rocking throughout the first eight minutes of the contest with USCB and Augusta tied at 20 after the second media timeout of the half. The Jags held a lead as large as five, but Polce scored a bucket and then picked off a pass and the basket followed to tie the game again.

Polce's second three-ball gave Beaufort its first lead and the teams exchanged buckets over the course of the next two minutes before coach Ron Fudala called a timeout. Coming out of the break Sfanos connected with a triple from the wing to knot the game at 28. Augusta went on a 16-7 run over the next four minutes to take a nine-point advantage, but Eason ended the run with a three-pointer with just over four minutes remaining in the half. The Sand Sharks quickly trimmed the lead to three, but the Jags recaptured the nine-point just as quick.

The exciting first half ended with the score 54-45 in favor of AU.

Augusta extended its lead as the second half began, pushing it to 16 just four minutes into the period. But USCB's relentless offensive attack continued to close the gap. Eason connected with his third three-pointer to make it a six-point game. As the contest continued each time the Sand Sharks got to within striking distance the Jags battled back keep Beaufort at arm's length.

Beaufort will break for the holidays and return to the court to end its non-conference schedule at Fayetteville State on Jan. 2.
