Personal bests, records broken highlight USCB in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM -- Three school records fell and numerous personal bests were set at the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker this weekend for the USCB Track and Field team, as multiple Sand Sharks impressed in their collegiate debuts. 

Sophia Stalford broke her own previous record of the weight throw with a mark of 36' 5.5", surpassing her previous best of 34' 9.5" while Caleb Cooper broke fellow teammate Cam Edward's indoor high jump record of 6' with a mark of 6' 4.76". The school's 4x4 relay record also fell with the foursome of Q France, Cornell Harris, Jakori Herring, and Zach Sellers crushed the previous record by nearly 30 seconds with a time of 3:27.08. 

Junior LeeAisha Ford bested her previous 60m dash record, crossing the finish line with a time of 8.29 during the prelims. Freshmen, Giana McNeil, Lily Raintree, and Dionna Rivers also set marks in the 60m race with times of 9.33, 9.16, and 8.13 respectively. Ford, Rivers and Lailah-Hope Williams also competed in the 200m posting times of 27.05, 27.61, and 28.45. James Bullard and Selena Cobbs joined McNeil in the 300m as the trio all posted sub one minute times. Freshmen Kennedy Kiel and Kasey Thompson notched times in the 400 with Thompson finishing with a time of 1:05.44 and Kiel 1:16.20. 

Kate Curry and Sofia Mejia finished with sub four-minute times in the 1000m race while Cydney Stevenson posted a time of 12:25:53 in the 3000m. 

On the field side De'Andra Brown, Raintree, and Williams competed in the long jump and Williams posted a PR mark of 4.71m while Brown posted a score of 4.50m. Brown, Kiel, and Stalford also competed in the shot put and each record scores of 8.47m, 5.83m, and 8.75m respectively. 

Bryson Shears and Sam Mitchell finished a hundredth of a second a part in the 60m prelims with times of 7.05 and 7.06 while John Davis and Mike Johnson also finished with sub 8-second times. Ramon White begain his day with a time of 25.16 in the 200m dash while Noah Hensley and Cade Garris each finished with sub 55-second times in the 400m. Herring and Ryan Kurz scored in the 800m dash with times of 2:02.50 and 2:20.15 while Jeremiah Grant posted a sub 3-minute time in the 1000m. Elliott Howe and Jacob Mitchell finished just seconds behind another in the mile race with times of 4:45.34 and 4:47.36. Beckett Jones and Eli Smith ran in the 3000m and finished in 39th and 49th place. 

Ethan Cockayne and Jake Laird each set marks of 3.70m in the pole vault and Cam Edwards placed in the top 10 of the long jump with a 6.66m jump. Edwards also finished in the top 10 of the triple jump with a mark of 14.06m. Sam Mitchell set PRs in the long and triple jump with marks of 6.58m and 13.94m. John Davis' leap of 12.63 was also a personal best. 

Jason Jose and Jaxson Allen both had strong debuts in both the shot put and weight throw, finishing with throws of 12.47m and 10.65 for Jose and 9.83m and 11.39 for Allen. Devin Watson did not score in the shot put but posted a personl best of 9.48m in the weight throw. 

USCB is back in action in the new year on January 18 at the Mondo College Invitational in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
