Premo's big night sends USCB home with W

BLUFFTON -- Mahkayla Premo scored a game-high 25 points along with four rebounds while playing all 40 minutes, leading the Sand Sharks to a 67-64 victory Wednesday night inside the Cove.

Janiyah Heyward was the only Sand Shark in double-figures as USCB's had a well-balanced offensive attack to earn its second PBC victory of the year.

"Just really proud," said head coach Sharon Versyp. "It was the grind and the grit. Understanding game situations and we can do XYZ, but players make plays and that was the difference tonight."

The Sand Sharks jumped out to an eight-point lead midway through the first period as Premo drained triples on back-to-back possessions. The Savannah native posted 15 points in the first 10 minutes. After a short run that trimmed Beaufort's lead to single-digits but Premo floated one in, and Heyward followed with a steal and finished the bucket to make it a 10-point USCB advantage. Ella Coffey finished off a beautiful reverse layup, extending USCB's lead.

The Bobcats outscored USCB 23-12 in the third quarter and then tied it and took the lead on consecutive three pointers forcing Versyp to burn a timeout. Madison Self put the Sand Sharks back in front after fighting through the Bobcats defense. The run continued with Kay'Mar Griffin beating the shot clock to make it 58-50.

GCSU trimmed it to a one possession game and Jada Warren missed both ends at the charity stripe but retained control of the ball with under 40 seconds to play. Brielle Bartelt was pure from the line to make it a four-point game, but Myra Strickland connected with a triple from the top of the key cutting it to 62-61. Premo knocked down both ends at the free throw to make it a three-point game. Georgia College was forced to foul, but USCB went 3-for-4 from the line to ice the game and win 67-64.

Beaufort hosts North Georgia on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff in the Cove.
