USCB stuns Night Hawks in massive upset

BLUFFTON -- A rematch that might've been circled for next season came earlier than expected as USCB pulled a massive upset over visiting North Georgia, defeating the Night Hawks 66-59 Saturday afternoon getting some revenge from the 103-38 loss last month.

"We're just going to give up twos, not threes," head coach Sharon Versyp said. "Every player that went in did something special for their team. We have to learn how to win, if we're ahead by six, don't turn the ball over, we have to learn how to win."

Janiyah Heyward powered the Sand Shark offense pouring on 19 points with nine rebounds and Brielle Bartelt added 16 with two steals.

USCB opened the game strong jumping out to an 8-4 lead. Kay'Mar Griffin was fouled right before the media timeout and then knocked down both ends increasing Beaufort's lead. Consecutive turnovers led to a 5-0 Night Hawks run to end the period. Bowman sparked the offense offense off the bench scoring a quick two buckets and Bartelt drained a three-ball from the top of the key to make it a one possession game.

Heyward's layup made it a one-point game and then she tied it after picking up loose ball and put it back up. The Sand Sharks took the lead after Heyward knocked down a 12-footer. North Georgia knocked down consecutive free throws and Bowman's drive to the basket just rolled out and the score was 31-27 at the half.

The teams exchanged buckets for most of the quarter and Bartelt tied it up and Heyward gave Beaufort ahead of the media timeout after battling through the Night Hawks' defense. UNG tied up and the game was tied after three quarters. Scoreless through the first two minutes of the fourth, Arei'a Garrett put USCB back in front as she was pure from the line and Bartelt's fast break layup extended Beaufort's lead. That was followed up by a steal and coach Versyp called a timeout with just under five to play. A 6-0 run followed that hyped up the crowd inside the Cove.

North Georgia went into man-to-man defense trying to stop the Sand Sharks offense, but sloppy defense allowed USCB to keep its one-possession advantage. Heyward picked up an offensive board and got an old-fashioned three-point play making it 61-57. USCB got the ball with just over 30 seconds left and North Georgia was forced to foul. Premo went 1-for-2 extending the lead to five. Two inbounds plays took 10 seconds off the and a failed triple put USCB back at the line with under 10 to play. The Sand Sharks iced the game going 4-for-4 from the line in the final seconds.

"I'm just so proud of this group. It wasn't pretty when we went down there but this right here takes that taste out of our mouth and our kids are starting to perform and starting to click. The players are buying in and it's great to see."
