Sand Sharks extend winning streak, sweep series with Pacers

AIKEN -- USCB women's basketball had to fight to the final seconds, but a strong defensive stand extended the Sand Sharks winning streak to three games after knocking off rival USC Aiken 56-55 Wednesday night.

Mahkayla Premo led all scorers with 17 points while adding seven rebounds and while Brielle Bartelt added 11 and both Shaniyah Rose and Jada Young contributed eighth. 

The Sand Shark jumped out to an early three-point lead after Taniyah Bowman weaved her way through the Pacer's defense and found the basket. After Aiken netted a triple to tie it at six USCB went on an 11-3 run to close out the first quarter. Beaufort picked up the pace in the second quarter shooting 58 percent from the field. The fast-paced offense continued as the lead was stretched into double figures. 

Aiken trimmed the deficit to single digits over the first six minutes into the second half. Following the media timeout the Pacers picked off the inbound pass and scored making it a one possession game. USCA's run continued and the Pacers took the lead after Sami Bardonaro connected on deep three-ball, but Premo answered connected on triple from the wing as time expired in the third and the Sand Sharks held a one-point lead heading into the final quarter. 

Bartelt's deep three followed by a Jada Young bucket increased the Sand Shark's lead back to two possessions. Beaufort's defense kept the Pacers at bay over the next three minutes in the media timeout and matched Aiken with every blow. USCB held a four-point lead as the clock ticked under a minute in regulation. Destiny Harman hit a three-pointer to make it a 56-55 Sand Shark lead and a shot clock violation gave the Pacers back the ball with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Jentri Worley lost possession and then regained it for the final shot, but it went wide off the glass to end the game.  

USCB hosts Flagler this Saturday in the regular season home finale. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. inside the Cove.
