USCB wins joust with Knights thanks to Phillips 8th inning RBI triple

HARDEEVILLE -- Carson Phillips collected three hits but none was as big as the 8th inning RBI triple that propelled USCB to a 4-3 win over Middle Georgia Tuesday evening at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville.

The Sand Sharks and Knights jousted to scoreless first five innings until Middle Georgia broke through in the sixth and RBI double. Beaufort answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, but Middle Georgia scored two the following thanks to back-to-back run scoring hits. Phillips opened the seventh with a single and Julian Galassi was hit by a pitch; Aiden Driscoll-Sadusky laid down a sacrifce bunt but the catcher's throw ended up in right field allowing Phillips to score all the way from first. Brian Meyer tied it up with an RBI groundout, knotting the game at three apiece.

Aiden Cooper (2-0) worked a scoreless eighth, setting the stage for USCB in the bottom half of the inning. The Sand Sharks recorded two outs on two pitches but Sebastian Biggs dropped a single over the third baseman's head bringing up Phillips. The sophomore infielder inside outed a pitch down the right field line and he sprinted all the way to third sliding in and celebrating the go-ahead run.

Ian Barnes came in and got the first two batters to fly out to left and then worked around a two out walk to get the final batter to ground out to end the game and pick up his fourth save of the year.

The Sand Sharks host Sheppard for a three-game set this weekend starting Friday for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
