Willis scores twice, USCB shutout Canes

AMERICUS -- Sophia Willis scored twice within 30 seconds of one another in the 56th minute and USCB shutout Georgia Southwestern 2-0 Saturday night at Hurricane Field. The Sand Sharks outshot the Hurricanes 15-5 while moving 1-0 in Peach Belt Conference play.

Beaufort controlled much of the game keeping GSW without a shot on goal in the first half and allowing only one in the second half. Emily Worrell picked up career win number 25 and her 13th clean sheet, increasing her all-time records.

Savanna Page was all over the Hurricanes for nearly a three-minute span, taking four shots – all on goal – but GSW's defense came up strong blocking three of the four as the goalkeeper was drawn out of the keeper's box.

After halftime, it seemed like only a matter of time before the Sand Sharks broke through. The Sand Sharks earned a corner kick and Jenny Hesby quickly passed to Synne Bye-Andersen who sent it back to Hesby who sent a cross in that Page nearly headed in, but it ricochetted off the cross bar. Willis was there to follow up and she headed it in to break the stalemate.

GSW misplayed a throw in right after the kickoff and Willis beat the keeper who tried to slide out of the penalty box to clear the loose ball. The Santa Clarita native took the shot from 23-yards out on an empty net to make it 2-0.

USCB returns home to Fin Land next Saturday to host North Georgia to continue Peach Belt play. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
