Willis scores as USCB ties in season opener

CENTRAL -- In season opening action Thursday night, USCB earned a 1-1 draw against Southern Wesleyan at Childs Field on the back of Sophia Willis' first collegiate goal, a header in the 75th minute.

Despite the outcome, interim head coach Dan Huff's Sand Sharks showed resiliency after falling behind in the 52nd minute. "Obviously not the outcome we were looking for," said Huff. "But we'll learn from this contest and be better prepared for our match against King on Saturday."

USCB had several scoring chances, out shooting the Warriors 16-14, but only seven shots were on goal. It wasn't until Jenny Hesby sent a cross from the right side late in the second half that Willis was able to head the ball past the SWU goalkeeper, tying the game at one.

The first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate, but Southern Wesleyan broke the deadlock after being awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. However, the Warriors capitalized on the opportunity by finding the back of the net. But following a slew of substitutions that gave USCB fresh legs, the Sand Sharks were able to net the equalizer.

Beaufort returns home to Fin Land Field on Saturday as it hosts King University. The two teams met for the first time last season and USCB came away with the 2-1 come from behind victory. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen live on the Sand Shark Gameday Network.
