Huff picks up first victory, strong second half propels USCB over King

BLUFFTON -- Following what was considered a disappointing season opener Thursday at Southern Wesleyan, the Sand Sharks quickly righted the ship against visiting King University Saturday afternoon shutting out the Tornado 4-0 at Fin Land Field.

Four different Sand Sharks recorded goals in the victory. Jenny Hesby and Savanna Page netted goals in the first half while Ellie Fielding and Jasiah Pack scored in the second. Page's 19th career goal moved her into fourth place on the all-time goals scored list.

"This is exactly how we wanted to respond following Thursday game," interim head coach Dan Huff said. "We worked on a couple of things at practice yesterday and once Savanna (Page) scored the first goal, you could tell everyone relaxed a little and the game really opened up for us."

The game was delayed three hours due to inclement weather, but after the rain stopped the field was still in good enough shape to play.

USCB outshot King 7-1 during the first 15 minutes before Page broke the stalemate picking up a loose ball off a defender. The Houston native dribbled through the Tornado defense and found the back of the net. King's Olivia Stetson faced another six shots before Hesby made it 2-0 with a header off a corner kick that just barely crossed the goal line.

The Sand Sharks controlled the entirety of the second half, keeping possession for more than 50 percent of the frame. Pack made it 3-0 after drilling home a one-timer from Bella Esteves just 10 minutes into the second half. Beaufort's relentless offensive attack continued and USCB added another goal after Fielding scored following a saved shot that Kensington Daigle blasted on the Tornado goalkeeper.

Once the clock read zero and the Sand Sharks circled for the postgame meeting, seniors Molly Kerr, Adrianna Martin, and Aleah White added to the celebration by giving coach Huff an ice water bath for his first victory.

"It's one I'm going to remember, that's for sure. This is a special group and we're going to accomplish a lot together," Huff said.

USCB welcomes Emmanuel to Fin Land on Wednesday for the two teams' first meeting in 12 years. The Sand Sharks beat the Lions 2-1 in their previous meeting on Sept. 14, 2012. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
