Three in double-figures but Sand Sharks fall to Bobcats

BLUFFTON -- A rough final period hurt the Sand Sharks inside the Cove Wednesday night as USCB women's basketball fell to Georgia College 63-50.

Lydia Gattozzi picked up a team-leading 12 points along with four rebounds, three steals, and a block. Brielle Bartelt contributed 11 points and Shaniya Rose added 10 to go along with seven rebounds. Madison Self picked up seven points while pulling down five boards, rounding out Beaufort's offensive attack.

A couple of triples gave the Sand Sharks and early advantage and USCB took control midway through the first period thanks to a couple of big baskets from Brielle Bartelt and Madison Self. GCSU battled back to within one, but Gattozzi picked off an errant pass and it led to a basket. Beaufort led 19-16 after the first 10 minutes.

The score remained the same for the first two minutes, but Gattozzi knocked down a pull-up jumper to break the scoreless drought. The Bobcats answered with a quick 5-0 run knotting the game at 21. A couple of threes and strong attack on the boards gave Georgia College the lead 28-23. GCSU scored another six points to lead by 11 at the break.

USCB opened the second half on a 13-2 run as the Bobcats lead quickly evaporated. A quick five points for the Georgia College extended the lead back to three possessions. Bartelt hit a quick jumper from the elbow made it a four-point game. After double intentional fouls it was a five-point game heading to the final quarter.

The Bobcats pushed its lead out to eight through the first five minutes and held on for the road victory.

USCB hosts the 5th ranked North Georgia Nighthawks on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. inside the Cove.
