Sand Sharks battle with #5 North Georgia, but fall at home

BLUFFTON -- Taniyah Bowman again made an impressive return to the court after coming back from injury, scoring a team-best 14 points, but the Sand Sharks fell to No. 5 North Georgia Saturday night 85-62 inside the Cove. 

Janiyah Heyward finished with 11 points and three assists, rebounds, and steals. 

The Sand Sharks opened the scoring with one off the glass, but the Nighthawks answered with a short run to take the lead 10-9 at the media timeout. UNG went on a run 6-0 over the next 90 seconds forcing a USCB timeout. Bowman knocked down a triple from the wing, cutting the lead to six and that's where it remained as the first quarter ended.
 
The Nighthawks tacked on early in the second period to make it a nine-point game. Averie Jones connected with a long three-pointer as North Georgia's lead grew to 14. 
 
After the break, the Nighthawks lead remained in double-figures, extending the lead to as large as 18. The Sand Sharks trimmed the deficit to 15 as the quarter ended and the score was 64-49 heading into the fourth period. 
 
UNG opened the final quarter on a 7-0 but it was Heyward who ended the run with a jumper from the elbow, making a 20-point game in favor of North Georgia. 

USCB hits the road to rival USC Aiken on Wednesday of next week. Tipoff against the Pacers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Aiken.
