Skid hits five as Sand Sharks fall to Flagler

BLUFFTON -- Lydia Gattozzi dropped a team-high 20 points, but the Sand Sharks losing streak reached five games Saturday after falling to Flagler 86-59 inside the Cove.

Brielle Bartelt and Janiyah Heyward netted double-digit performances with 10 and 12 points apiece, but USCB had 25 turnovers in the game and shot just 33 percent from the field.

USCB opened a 6-0 run to begin the game, but the Saints battled back to knot the game 8-8 at the first media timeout. The Sand Sharks struggled from the field shooting just 36 percent through the first five minutes. Bartelt ended Beaufort's cold spell scoring on back-to-back possessions.

Triples flew to open the second period after Flagler sandwiched two three-pointers after Gattozzi drained her own from the top of the key. Flagler's lead was down to a single point, but the Saints went on a 7-0 run out of the media break. The Saints finished the quarter on a 12-6 run, extending its lead to 11 at halftime.

Sharlale McCormick and Destiny McClendon connected with three-pointers in the opening minutes and Flagler's lead stayed in double-figures midway through the period. Taniyah Bowman's speed came into play as the Sand Sharks cut the lead to single digits, but Flagler answered right back playing lock down defense, forcing multiple USCB turnovers leading to a 12-point Saints advantage. The lead grew to 18 as the game headed to the final quarter.

The Saints continued to force Beaufort to turn the ball over in the fourth stanza pushing its lead to as large as 25 with three minutes to go.

The Sand Sharks hit the road next Wednesday for a match up with Columbus Stats. Tip-off with the Cougars is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
