Tough third quarter hurts USCB vs Columbus State

COLUMBUS -- Shaniya Rose was two points away from a double-double with eight points and 11 boards, but the Sand Sharks fell to Columbus State 80-63 Wednesday night. USCB is now 3-13 on the season and 1-7 in PBC play.

No Sand Shark scored more than eight points on the night as both Rose and Taniyah Bowman tied for the team. Brianna Pelote had seven and the trio of Lydia Gattozzi, Janiyah Heyward and Madison Self add six.

USCB led for most the opening minutes thanks to scores from Pelote and Self. The lead stretched to as large as seven, but CSU went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. Heyward connected with a three-pointer to recapture the lead, but the Cougars made two threes as the period ended, making the score 24-18.

It was a scoreless first two-plus minutes of the period before Pelote scored the first points for either team. The scoring drought continued for both squads as the next basket wasn't made until Bowman's layup with six minute to play. Pelote kissed one off the glass and made a free throw to put the Sand Sharks up with under two minutes to play. Bre'Lyn Snipes was pure from the charity stripe and then picked off the ensuing inbound and made the basket to put CSU up 31-29 with only seconds left in the half. USCB had a chance for a last second shot, but the ball was deflected as time expired.

Columbus State opened the third period on a 10-3 run forcing Coach Sharon Versyp to call a timeout. CSU went 12-for-17 from the floor in the period, outscoring the Sand Sharks 34-15 in the quarter.

The Sand Sharks scored the first six points of the final period, but Columbus Stare countered with six of their own to take a 21-point lead. The Cougars would hold on for the 17-point victory as the clock read zero.

USCB's road trip continues as the Sand Sharks travel to Morrow, Georgia for a matchup against the Clayton State Lakers.
