Bowman shines as USCB falls to Lakers

MORROW -- Taniyah Bowman's 16 points and six boards led the way for USCB Saturday at Clayton State, but the Sand Sharks scored just 28 points in the second half and fell to the Lakers 67-59.
 
Brielle Bartelt was the other scorer in double-figures for Beaufort, scoring 10 points.
 
Clayton State scored the opening bucket of the game, but USCB answered with a quick 8-0 run over the next three minutes. Coming out of the media timeout the Lakers scored twice cutting the lead to two. The Sand Sharks added on as the quarter came to a close and went into the second period up six after Bartelt's pull-up jumper.
 
Beaufort held on to the lead midway through the quarter, but Clayton State's defense kept USCB off the board and eventually took the lead 23-22 and held on to that lead until Bowman's two free throws put the Sand Sharks back in front with under a minute to play. Amiyah Edney-Holmes was pure from the line to take a 30-29 lead, but Madison Self's layup as time expired put the Sand Sharks ahead at the half.
 
The teams exchanged the lead multiple times throughout the first five minutes of the second half, but Sheridan Bostic – who went 7-of-9 in the first meeting this season – connected with a three ball that put USCB up. The Lakers countered with an old fashioned three-point play to make the score 43-42.
 
CSU held on to its lead throughout the fourth, claiming the 67-59 victory.
 
USCB returns home this Wednesday against Lander. Scheduled tipoff inside the Cove is set for 5:30 p.m.
