Sand Sharks caged Bearcats, avenge earlier loss

BLUFFTON -- USCB had four players in double figures and the Sand Sharks put together a complete game, defeating the Lander Bearcats 63-57 Wednesday night inside the Cove.
 
"Lander's a really, really good basketball team," said head coach Sharon Versyp. "But today I liked the energy. Loved the commitment and the trust I think we had on the court. It really came together."
 
Janiyah Heyward fell just one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season with 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Sand Sharks in scoring. Lydia Gattozzi and Brianna Pelote each scored 11 points and Taniyah Bowman added 10. Madison Self dominated on the glass picking up 10 boards.
 
It was a low scoring affair during the first four minutes before Lander jumped out to a two-score lead right before the media timeout. The lead then changed four times as Lander took a 12-11 lead into the second period. 
 
Sheridan Bostic sunk her second triple of the evening making it 17-15 in favor the Bearcats as Lander extended its lead to five out of the media break. Bowman's driving layup cut it to three and Heyward's turn around layup cut it a one-point game. After a quick score put LU up three but Pelote trimmed it back to one. Two free throws and another basket gave Lander a five-point lead heading into the half. 
 
USCB opened the second half on a 9-2 run to capture its first lead since the opening period. Heyward's offensive board and putback put the Sand Sharks up two. An acrobatic score from Brielle Bartelt and converted free throw put Beaufort up three and Bowman's steal and layup made it a five-point game. Pelote scored the next four points for USCB to make it 49-43 into the fourth. 
 
Pelote stayed on fire picking up her 10th point of the night while drawing the foul and converting the three-point the old-fashioned way. USCB kept its two score lead as the clock winded down, but Lander continued to fight back making it a three-point game with under five to play.
 
Lander took the lead back at the charity stripe, but Bowman weaved through the defense to recapture the lead and Heyward's float made it three-point game. After the Bearcats knotted the game at 57 Heyward picked off a ball as Lander brought it up the court and she finished the fast break and the same happened on the next possession for Gattozzi making it a four-point Sand Shark lead. Bowman was fouled after the Bearcats missed a scoring chance and she knocked down one from the line making it 62-57. USCB added one more to ice the game for Beaufort to make it 63-57.
 
The Sand Sharks host reigning PBC champion Georgia Southwestern on Saturday with tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the Cove.
 
"Just proud of the group. We had reset – a tough reset – and it's nice to come out and be victorious tonight. We're going to enjoy this one."
